When our new state was established in October 1918, it was necessary to create new state symbols. A survey was therefore announced for the emblems, for which Jaroslav Kursa, as an official of the Archives of the Ministry of the Interior, prepared proposals. These were based on various historical emblems of our countries. František Kysela created the final design of this small state emblem. It is a red shield and on it a silver two-tailed lion in a leap looking to the right with open mouth and outstretched tongue with claws and a headdress in gold. The lion bears on its chest a red shield with three blue peaks, with a silver two-armed cross on the middle highest peak - the well-known emblem of Slovakia.
The emblem was used by our ancestors during the First Republic, replaced during the German occupation, but reintroduced after the liberation in 1945. It was replaced by the state emblem of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, which was adopted on 17 November 1960.
