Do you love modern art and Czech art? The Black King by Josef Čapek hangs in the National Gallery, but you can also wear it on a T-shirt in your wardrobe. The painting, composed of geometric shapes and imitated real structures, was painted by the genius painter, graphic artist, illustrator and writer in 1920, and evokes exoticism, adventure and the unknown. Show the world with a T-shirt that Josef Čapek's work is not just about Pejsk and Katy.
Josef Čapek was born in 1887 and yes, he was the older brother of the writer Karel Čapek. He studied art in both Prague and Paris, but soon returned to Bohemia to find his love, Jarmila Pospíšilová, whom he married in 1919 after a nine-year relationship. For his daughter Alena he wrote and created the famous Tale of a Dog and a Cat, but he also wrote essays, short stories and other literary works with his brother.
He was primarily a visual artist, belonging to the Group of Visual Artists and later to the Tvrdošíjné. He exhibited at the Municipal House or, for example, at Mánes. His works include cubism, aboriginal art, landscapes, portraits, children's motifs and anti-fascist drawings.
Josef Čapek was imprisoned in concentration camps and died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen in 1945, probably just before its liberation.
