But who was Václav Havel? And why is he characterized by a pint of beer? Today, we know Václav Havel primarily as a politician and dissident, but it is also necessary to remember his career as a playwright, writer and author of plays such as The Garden Party and Vernisage. For several months in 1974, the future president also worked as a worker at the Trutnov brewery, which inspired him to write one of his most famous works, the tragicomic absurdist drama Audience. Václav Havel began to become a prominent figure on the political scene during the Prague Spring, was banned from publishing after the suppression of reforms in 1968, changed jobs and became a member of dissent, later became a spokesman for Charter 77, co-founded the Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted and spent several years intermittently in detention. He was the leading figure of November 1989, the last Czechoslovak and the first Czech president. He is credited with our accession to the EU and NATO, but also, for example, with the first Czech concert by the Rolling Stones or the visit of Pope John Paul II.
