Who Charles IV is, all Czechs know today. Who he was, when he lived, how many wives he had and what he founded, we know by heart. But did you also know that he tried to protect the Czech forests from unauthorised clearing, had vineyards planted in Prague, or carved willow wicker during audiences when he listened to people's requests? He was also a philanderer, well-travelled and liked to take part in tournaments in disguise. "You have no idea how monstrous it is to rule!" Charles IV wrote to the Italian writer Francesco Petrarch. As a ruler, he was ambitious, pragmatic, pious, but also cunning. And thanks to this, he is remembered today as one of the most important figures in Czech history.
