His studies focused on fine art, but he was soon attracted to the world of music and began working with the underground bands Primitives and the famous Plastic People of the Universe, for whom he was manager and artistic director. He was imprisoned five times for his anti-communist views and actions, spending a total of eight and a half years behind bars. In prison he escaped into the world of poetry and became a poet. For example, he won the Tom Stoppard Prize for Magor's Swan Songs. Magor also organised festivals of independent culture, signed Charter 77, became a member of VONS (Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Prosecuted) and was still publicly active after 1989.
Jitka Rufferová designed a T-shirt with Magor Jirous not only for all unrestrained individuals and underground lovers.
