It was late evening, May Day... We all know these verses. But did you know that even before them, the poem "The Czechs are a good nation" is heard in Mácha's May? Karel Hynek Mácha was a great patriot, an enthusiastic traveller, a theatre amateur, but also a lover of castles. The motif of the blossoming collage with Mácha's portrait was created by Anna Ročková, but is based on an original drawing by Jan Vilímek. One of the most famous Czech poets was born with his original name Ignác Mácha in 1810 in Prague. He changed his name to Hynek later and added the first name Karel when he began to support the national revival. He studied at church schools, but then also at the Faculty of Philosophy and Law at the University of Prague, but died very young. The fatal wife of Karel Hynek Mácha was Lori, or Eleonora Šomková. They had a complicated relationship that ended after three years with the poet's death. By that time, the couple had a newly born son, Karel Ludvík, and were only a few days away from marriage. Mácha's death is still a matter of conjecture. He died in Litoměřice in October 1836 of cholera. It is still speculated whether he contracted the disease while fighting a fire or on his way to Prague. His son died a year later, of canine distemper.
