Josef Čapek was the older brother of the writer Karel. He was born in 1887 and dedicated his life to art in various forms. He was a painter, illustrator, and writer. For example, he wrote the famous Tales of a Dog and a Cat for his daughter, but he also created essays and other literary works, also with his brother. Josef Čapek exhibited his artworks in Mánes or the Municipal House and was a member of the Tvrdošíjné. His work mixes cubism with indigenous art, portraits, landscapes, but also, for example, anti-fascist motifs. During World War II, the artist was imprisoned and died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, just before its liberation.
