"German is my mother tongue, but Czech is closer to my heart." Franz Kafka is one of the most respected literary creators not only in the Czech Republic, but all over the world. The author of his motif on the T-shirt is Dan Verner. Kafka's portrait is set against the background of the text from his most famous novel, The Metamorphosis.
The world-famous writer was born in 1883 in Prague into a Jewish family of a haberdasher. His mother tongue was German, in which he studied, and he became a doctor of law. He worked almost all his life in an insurance company, but also occasionally published in various magazines. But he saw literature as his only vocation. Among his best-known works are the novels The Castle and The Trial, and the short story The Change. In 1924, at the age of 41, he died of tuberculosis.
Kafka's work was first translated into Czech by Milena Jesenská, a journalist and writer who later died tragically in a concentration camp. It was she who popularised Kafka in the Czech lands. Another close friend was the writer Max Brod, thanks to whom many of Kafka's works were published posthumously.
And what was the writer supposedly like in private? Sensitive, kind, smiling and always well-groomed. He disliked vulgar humour and had low self-esteem.
