Who was Karel Teige? Among other things, he was an important art critic and theorist, artist and typographer. He was a versatile personality of the Czech First Republic avant-garde - he was interested in architecture, theatre, film, fine art, photography, literature and the aforementioned typography. We have used his most famous typographic work - Nezval's Alphabet - as a motif on a T-shirt. Milča Mayerová presented here dance compositions according to the letters of the alphabet. The author of the design is Karolína Pucholtová.
Teige was born in Prague in 1900. At grammar school he was a classmate of Vladislav Vančura, and at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University he attended lectures by F. X. Šalda. He co-founded Devětsil, contributed, for example, to Lidové noviny, but was also at the birth of the Liberated Theatre. He is the author of numerous studies and scientific works, but he devoted his life to typography and edited many books and other printed materials.
Teige died in 1951 of a heart attack, and just a few days after his death his wife and his mistress committed suicide.
