12 exceptional photographs in a unique calendar published on the occasion of the exhibition Unknown Portraits of the Famous: Personalities between the First Republic and Totalitarianism, presented at the MacNeven Palace in Prague from 10 October 2022 to 15 January 2023. All photographs are from the collection of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. Proceeds from the calendar will be donated to the War Veterans Day collection organized by Post Bellum. The funds will go towards direct aid to the heroes and the preservation of their stories, which the organisation is documenting as part of the Memory of the Nation project.
"For modern society, successful people are a symbol of its strength and a source of (national) pride. But all it takes is a change in political circumstances, an economic downturn or other shock to destabilize their system, and the heroes who were supposed to be our role models become scapegoats at whose expense we medicate our anxieties and bad consciences. All the personalities included in the exhibition have lived through periods of glory and crisis. One day they shone, were successful writers, actors and inventors, with whom politicians were happy to shake hands, and the next day they fled to emigration, lost their jobs and were subjected to media harassment."
