Jan Werich and Jiří Voskovec met as classmates in high school, but it was not until 1926 that their enormous talent for comedy became apparent, when they began devising and performing entertaining shows together at the Liberation Theatre. In addition to their funny plays, they were also extremely fond of forbins - improvised dialogues on topical subjects, which they would entertain the audience with before the actual performance began. The duo was later joined by the gifted composer Jaroslav Ježek and not only unforgettable plays but also catchy songs were born.

The style of Voskovec and Werich, full of satire, allusions to society and criticism of politicians and the public, had many opponents, and the theatre even had to close in 1938 because of its anti-fascist orientation, and the famous duo emigrated to the USA. After the end of the war, they both returned to Czechoslovakia. However, Voskovec returned to the USA for good in 1950, where he devoted himself mainly to theatre and film, for example, from Twelve Angry Men. Jan Werich remained in Czechoslovakia, managing the ABC theatre and making films. In 1968 he signed the Two Thousand Words manifesto and during the period of normalisation he was not allowed to speak publicly. Werich died in 1980, Voskovec a year later. They corresponded until their deaths.
