Don't be afraid, don't lie and don't steal. The quote of the politician, philosopher, sociologist, educator, feminist and above all the first Czechoslovak president should be used by everyone in life. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk is one of those to whom we owe the present form of our state, freedom, democracy and the republic as such. You can now proudly wear his not-so-famous portrait, which captures him in full force, on your T-shirt (or even a sweatshirt). Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, TGM, Daddy Masaryk or President Liberator. He's called many things, but everyone knows him. He was born on 7 March 1850 in Hodonín to a coachman and a cook. He studied in Strážnice, Brno, Vienna and Leipzig. In 1878, he married an American, Charlotte Garrigue, in New York and took her surname. He taught at university, was a member of parliament, was interested in history and social issues and supported the idea of an independent Czechoslovakia. He won the world powers to his side and led the organisation of the Czechoslovak legions during the First World War. On 28 October 1918 he became the first president of Czechoslovakia and was re-elected in 1920, 1927 and 1934. He himself abdicated for health reasons in 1935, and died on 14 September 1937. In addition to supporting universal suffrage or the eight-hour workday, for example, Masaryk was friends with Edvard Beneš, Karel Čapek and other intellectuals of the First Republic. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize seventeen times. The tradition was that as long as Masaryk was alive, Hitler would not dare to start a war. The President died a year and two weeks before the Munich Agreement was signed.
