It offers an incredible view of Brno and is itself an architectural jewel that has earned its uniqueness, among other things, a place on the UNESCO list. It was used as a family home, occupied by the Gestapo, destroyed by the Soviet army, but it was also a dance school or a rehabilitation centre. It was here that the division of Czechoslovakia was decided, and today it is one of our leading monuments open to the public, Vila Tugendhat has fascinated its visitors for almost 100 years. Its motif for our T-shirts and posters was created by Dan Verner.
Originally it was to be a family home for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat and their children. However, the couple were enthralled by the revolutionary ideas of the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and so a building without equal was created. Clean lines, endless open space, exotic materials and the most modern technical equipment. The family moved in in 1930, but 8 years later had to leave the house because of their Jewish background. The villa was then taken over by the Gestapo, and radical alterations and theft of furnishings ensued. Devastation did not escape the villa even during the liberation by the Soviet army.
Subsequently, the premises of the villa were used for a private dance school and after nationalization in 1950 as a rehabilitation centre for children. In the 1960s, various architects and Brno personalities tried to restore the villa to its original character and glory. Architect Kalivoda even contacted Greta Tugendhat. After the occupation in 1968, however, any hope of restoration disappeared. The first renovations did not take place until 1981, but the aim was to repair the villa so that it would survive the years to come. It was not until 2010 that Villa Tugendhat was to be restored. Within two years, the house was restored to the appearance it had when it was completed in 1930, including replicas of the furnishings. Thanks to this, it can now fascinate hundreds of visitors a day.
