It's him! The one called Toyen

That's him! - Three words that may be the origin of the surrealist painter Toyen's artistic name. A name as mysterious as she was. It was as if she was still covering her tracks. Others have given their testimonies about her. The painter Jindřich Štyrský, with whom she formed a lifelong artistic duo. The Jewish poet Jindřich Heisler, whom she hid in her Žižkov apartment until the end of the war because he refused to join the transport. Her friends from Devětsil, Vítězslav Nezval, Jaroslav Seifert and Karel Teige. Or the French Surrealists when she went into exile in Paris in 1947. Thanks to these testimonies, but also based on research in archives in the Czech Republic and France, Milena Štráfeldová has written a fictionalized biography of her. The story of Marie Čermínová, a native of Prague's Smíchov district, whom André Breton himself ranked among the ten most important artists of the 20th century.
