Věra Čáslavská was involved in ballet and figure skating from a young age, but she shone as a sports gymnast. Since 1957, she gradually worked her way up from the national junior and junior girls' championships to the European Championships, the World Championships and the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960, Tokyo in 1964 and finally Mexico in 1968.

In 1968, she also became politically involved, signing the Two Thousand Words manifesto. It was at the Mexico Games that she drew the most attention to herself, winning gold four times and silver twice. During the ceremony, where she stood on the podium with a representative of the Soviet Union, her gestures silently protested against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops in August of that year. During the Soviet anthem, she turned her head away from her opponent and looked at the ground, making her opinion clear to the world, but also showing great courage. That same year, she was also named the best sportswoman in the world.

The Games in Mexico were the last for Čáslavská, ending her sporting career there. She raised two children and after the Velvet Revolution she worked as an advisor and assistant to Václav Havel. She died in 2016.
